CRAA Women D1 College Playoffs Ramp Up This Week

Michigan and Davenport met earlier this year, with Davenport winning.

The CRAA Women’s D1 College final eight are set and the teams will face off this weekend to decide who plays in the national final December 4 in North Carolina.

Leading the field is Davenport. The Panthers have lost just the once, against Penn State, and in their eight victories have held the opposition to just 51 points. Powerful up front with captain Bethany Gable, Ashleigh DeWitt, and the imposing Kakalaleohiva Kinikini, Davenport works a nice offload game using their physical strength, and that then unleashes talented backs such as Megan Bird, Aubrey Crist, and Adi Ochoa.

We checked in with USA Eagle Olivia Ortiz, who is also finishing her last year with Davenport but won't be there because she's in the UK with the USA team. Working as an assistant coach with the team she's been able to see a big progression.

"I'm excited for them," Ortiz said. "We've been working on developing their skills and using their physicality."

Davenport takes on Colorado, which has been enjoying a solid season in the West, using their overall pace to rack up some big scores.

The winner of that game will take on the winner of Michigan and Utah State. Michigan has battled through a tough Big 10 conference and it's that series of competitive games that will see them through. But it's worth noting that Michigan shipped over 50 to Notre Dame and to Davenport, and Davenport also beat Notre Dame. This, of course, just puts Davenport more securely in the favorites' seat.

Utah State brings a ton of pace, and with the games on an expected dry track in Norman, Okla., they could test the Michigan defense.

In the opposite side of the bracket, played at the US Naval Academy, Indiana faces Northeaster. Indiana lost to Michigan 14-7 in regular-season play, so isn't too far behind the Wolverines. Northeastern opened their season with two impressive shutouts and battled past a tough Boston University side 24-7. But their most impressive was their 36-0 shutout of Connecticut.

UConn, for their part, take on Navy. Led by No. 8 and 2020 Sorensen Award finalist Sarah Skinner (who has emerged as a key finisher) Navy has embraced a challenging schedule, taking apart a pretty useful Virginia side, losing by a point to NIRA DII Finalists West Chester. But they were also basically humbled by Queens University and lost also to Penn State. That, in the end, will keep them centered in what promises to be a tough bracket at the Naval Academy's Prusmack Rugby Complex.
