Men's DII College Around the Country

Here's a look at the Men's DII college landscape over the weekend with a nod to who was ranked where.

If a team's ranking isn't listed it's because they didn't make the GRR Top 40.

Great Lakes

Central Michigan (#9) took care of Ferris State (#30) 72-7 in the Great Lakes Conference. Inside center Nate Curtis scored five tries, giving him 11 tries in only three games as CMU moved to 2-1.

The lone team to beat them is Adrian College (#2), which shut out Grand Valley State (#40) paced by a brace of tries from MacGregor Adams, Aleki Sanita Tautua'a, Lolohea Fonua, and Max Miller.

"Our boys kept possession throughout a majority of the match," said head coach Benny Mateialona. "It is a win, yes, but I'm not completely satisfied with our execution."

Adrian is 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Rocky Mountain

Further west, Montana State (#28) took a 29-15 result from Western Colorado.

Chinua Ogu bust up the middle for the first MSU try, and Lex Minniear followed with another.  Scott Bernaud and Martin Arias-Fernandez also touched down for a 22-0 halftime lead.

Jackson Ellbogen-Pettersen was the lone try-scorer for MSU in the second half.

That’s a good start for Montana State in the Rocky Mountain.

Southern

With #1 Furman, #17 Belmont Abbey, and #18 UNC-Charlotte all idle, we got a bit of a move in the East. UNC-WIlmington, who were #38 in Week 3 before being turfed out, rebounded from a tough close loss early in the season to defeat a well-regarded UNC-Chapel Hill ((#19) that was previously 2-0.

Chapel Hill still leads the Southern Conference Premier East, but now they could well be looking over their shoulder at Wilmington, East Carolina, and Citadel.

SCRC

We tell you all about Memphis (#16) over Auburn in a result that might still bump Auburn into the Top 40. Go here for more>>

Allegheny

IUP (#14) battled with a tough Kent State (#24) team in the first half, with IUP taking a slim lead into halftime. This battle was led by Kent State flyhalf Luke Kastelic and IUP scrumhalf RJ Beach, best friends since elementary school, teammates from 7th grade through their state championship with Kiski Valley in Rugby PA.

It was Beach’s team that pulled away in the second half with IUP winning 40-5. Brian Arnold scored three tries, Dom Holmes scored his first college try, and Tyler Johnson also touched down. Barry Ashway converted six conversions.

Meanwhile, Alderson Broaddus (#36) tied West Virginia (#35) 10-10 in a victory for the rankings.

MCRC

The MCRC, unfortunately, had three forfeits. The one game played saw Marian (#3) roll by Miami of Ohio 102-0.

Great Midwest

Northern Iowa (#8), UW-Platteville (#27), and Marquette (#6) all went to 2-0 in the Great Midwest. More details here>>

MARC

In the Mid-Atlantic things are starting slowly, but The College of New Jersey has jumped to a 2-0 lead after beat East Stroudsburg 15-7.

Tri-State

The Tri-State DII Conference is shrinking as it’s become clear that William Paterson cannot play this year. So we’re down to four teams, with USMMA (#22), Marist (#23), Seton Hall, and RPI (#32). This week RPI took on Seton Hall and won 13-3 to improve to 1-2.

NEWCRC

The very big New England Wide College Rugby Conference, the teams that usually do well in that conference starting strong. Norwich (#4), Coast Guard (#20), UMass-Lowell (#13), and Vermont (#5) all won to improve to 2-0.
