The Pacific West Rugby Conference may well be coming down to a three-horse race after this weekend’s results.

Chico State remains atop the standings after soundly beating San Francisco State in a result that wasn’t completely unexpected. Chico is very strong this year, but will be looking back at their opening-week loss to UC Davis, a close one at 18-15, with some regret.

Arizona State scored four second-half tries, two by Alex Sandstrom, to defeated Arizona 34-15 Sunday in PAC Rugby Conference action.

The Sun Devils moved to 1-1 in conference play with the victory, a much-improved performance if giving up 100 against Cal last week, when Head Coach Gary Lane ran in the subs early.

The playoff picture for the Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference got a bit mistier this weekend as unbeaten Washington lost and Western Washington won a crucial game.

Led by a very strong defensive effort and a little bit of good fortune, Cal State Long Beach took control of the Gold Coast Men’s DIAA Conference with a 23-0 shutout of Santa Barbara City College Saturday.

Both CSULB and SBCC came into the game boasting high-powered offenses, so Long Beach Head Coach Jason Reynolds looked to neutralize his opponents’ attacking strengths.
