In girls high school rugby, Northern California is considered Amazon territory. The January Kickoff Tournament seemed to reiterate that fact, and league contenders – namely Danville and Pleasanton – played sobering games against the Sacramento side. But Saturday showed that the league title is far from decided, as Pleasanton carved out a piece of NorCal land for itself.
Washington State will take the second North seed to the Pacific Mountain Conference championship (March 28-29), and Saturday’s game against Central Washington proved that the Cougars deserve it. Even though the Wildcats prevailed 31-19, WSU rounded out its regular season with a playoff-worthy performance.
Wheeling Jesuit ran out to a 20-0 first half and held on to beat the US Naval Academy 25-19 in something of an upset Saturday.
WJU is ranked #29 by Goff Rugby Report, while Navy, which had been more active in 15s games in 2015, had moved up to #10.
The way seems pretty clear for Middle Tennessee State and Central Florida to win their respective divisions in the South Independent Rugby Conference after both teams won big this weekend.
