College rugby in California and Arizona is moving slowly but it is moving, as several teams have enjoyed pre-season run-outs this fall.

On Saturday, Arizona State put in an impressive performance in beating Grand Canyon University 50-8. Ryan Spiwak scored three tries in a game where the Sun Devils looked in good form for so early in the season.

BERKELEY – With 32 tries scored and only one try surrendered during a 4-0 Saturday on Witter Rugby Field, Cal won their pool in impressive fashion in the PAC Rugby 7s Championship; meanwhile UCLA edged Arizona State to take Pool B.

Cal will take on Arizona State at 1:05pm Sunday, while UCLA will face Utah, the only team to score against Cal, in the other Cup Semifinal at 1:25pm.

Perhaps the most compelling college 7s tournament of the fall is happening this coming weekend at Cal’s Witter Rugby Field.

While Cal will be favored once again, the Bears will face stiff competition from a skilled and determined Arizona State team, a UCLA squad that has the ability to shake things up, and a Utah squad with a strong tradition in 7s.
