Pac-12 7s Kicks Off Saturday

Perhaps the most compelling college 7s tournament of the fall is happening this coming weekend at Cal’s Witter Rugby Field.

While Cal will be favored once again, the Bears will face stiff competition from a skilled and determined Arizona State team, a UCLA squad that has the ability to shake things up, and a Utah squad with a strong tradition in 7s.

Cal heads up Pool A with the aforementioned Utes, Colorado, Oregon State, and Stanford. Meanwhile, in Pool B Arizona State and UCLA have to be considered co-favorites, with Arizona close behind and Oregon and USC also in the mix.

The tournament will cover two days, with all teams playing four pool games on Saturday, starting with Cal v Stanford at 9am.

On Sunday, play begins at noon with the Bowl Semis between the teams that finished 3rd and 4th in the pools. The Cup Semis follow and then a playoff between the two 5th-place teams.

The winners of the Cup Semis play for the championship, while the losing teams play for the Plate. The winners of the Bowl Semis play for the Bowl, and the losing teams play for the Shield.

The Sunday action, starting with the Cup Semis, will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network and on Pac-12.com, with former USA players Brian Hightower and Colin Hawley working the mics. Check your local listings.
