D2 Weekend Preview: See You at Dawgs vs 'Cats
It's an active weekend in D2 but not necessarily one where we see a lot of ranked team-vs-ranked team matchups.
We do see #5 Northern Iowa face off with #21 Marquette in an early litmus test for both. Marquette is pretty sure they have a solid team and club president Dominic Bartolone was pretty direct when asked about team goals.
"Our goal for the season is to win the Great Midwest and qualify for Nationals," he said. By "Nationals" we actually take it to mean the final four. To do that, they probably have to get through Northern Iowa.
With flyhalf David Kuebler and center Kelly Roach firing on attack and Graham Pierce, Peter Curran, and Johnny O’Brien at the coal face up front, they have the ability.
Also in the GMW, an up-and-coming Benedictine (not the Benedictine we profile in the link below, but the other one) takes on Loyola in a game that could cause Benedictine to vault into the rankings.
D2 Roundup. Who Has Started Strong?
Virginia vs UNC Wilmington is a big one, being #18 vs #2. Wilmington has been weather hit and would like to get a full game in. Virginia, a team we had listed in the wrong conference (!) because they officially moved to the Southern this fall, will probably have their most intense regular season in a while.
UMS&T (#17) and John Brown (#31) meet up in the Gateway. S&T lost big to Southern Nazarene but that was to be expected. They will take lessons from that.
UMBC (#30) is at #15 Villanova and Goff Rugby Report will be at that one so if you're there come say hi!
And on Sunday SUNY Oswego, which was moved into GRR's Top 40 this week, takes on #13 Cornell. Both of those rankings are based on some early results and could change dramatically.
