College Women
It's a small but very important weekend for college rugby, as six major championships are decided.
Quinnipiac center Ilona Maher has been named the winner of the 2016-17 MA Sorensen Award as the top women's college rugby player in the country.
So we now know the teams playing for a major 7s championship in college rugby, and, boy, it's a lot of teams.
It's a lot even though USA Rugby drastically reduced their number of teams participating. We still have 16 USA DI Men's teams, 24 CRC Men's teams, 12 USA Women's teams, 16 CRC Women's teams, 12 USA DII Men's teams, 8 NSCRO Men's teams, and 6 CRC Collegiate Challenge teams.
We're coming close to figuring out who is playing where in women's college 7s.
USA Rugby has still not announced officially what are their qualifiers. What they have is a list of tournaments that applied for qualifier status, but no confirmation that those are the qualifiers. But, while they say "Never Assume" we are making some assumptions along the way.
Eight teams are left for the Women's DI College championships.
The past weekend began with 16 teams in the running. The winners from the 1st round qualified for one of two championships. The DI Elite semifinalists are the four teams who won twice over the weekend - the Round of 16 and Quarterfinals. The DI semifinalists are the teams that lost the Quarterfinals.
