Herriman and East, the only single school programs in Utah's combined Tier 1, met in an early season match after getting their feet wet at the Puriri Invitational last week.
Defending state champion East was looking to establish itself after an uneven showing in that warmup tournament, while Herriman was looking to continue its momentum from a strong start.
“Defense wins games, offense determines how much you win by,” said senior captain and center Max Wyckoff when asked about Xavier’s opening victory over St. Gregory the Great Academy. “Our defense really shut them down,” Wyckoff said with a smile.

Cal Poly pushed Saint Mary's in a rather surprising meeting of the top two teams in the California D1A Conference, but the Gaels held on 43-38.
The game started well for the Gaels. They moved into Cal Poly territory and spun it wide to freshman Aisake Tukuafu, who sped in to touch down. Ollie Cline slotted the extras and it was 7-0.
Torrey Pines won the SoCal single-school final Saturday night in San Diego, defeating Loyola of LA 41-12 behind a very effective kicking game.
The Falcons did not have an easy time of it and while they eventually won by 29, the game was far from a runaway.
Since we were late in previewing this weekend in D1AA, we will be looking at the weekend in terms of hindsight.
FloridaCentral Florida beat Florida 38-26 to improve to 3-2. Scrumhalf Jaxson Patterson and wing James White each scored two tries for the Knights, while captain and inside center Jack Puchalski and his center partner William Boundy each added one.
