Black Katts throughout the Midwest were celebrating big wins last weekend, as the DII powerhouse won its 8th consecutive Foolsfest title. The win was a testament to Winona’s depth, as the school had lent five of its best players to the Minnesota U24s for the Midwest LAU tournament in Davenport, Iowa.
The Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference (MARC) pooled 12 teams together for the first of its women's college 7s series, and DII Bloomsburg finished the day with a perfect record and tournament trophy. It was quite the accomplishment for a team that has played in only one 7s tournament previous to Saturday’s title run.
Notre Dame College hosted a four-team women’s 7s tournament last weekend, and the victor was guaranteed a berth to the national 7s championship on May 23-24 in Denver. DI Michigan and Ohio State got in some good warm-up games as they look toward this weekend’s Big Ten 7s championship, but the event was all about Notre Dame College vs. Davenport.
Arizona held its DI and DII Boys HS semifinals this past weekend.
In DII, Old Pueblo defeated Hamilton in a game that was tight early on but Old Pueblo ran away with it late to win 50-24. The second semifinal was a lot closer, with North Valley, only a year removed from playing in the DII final, facing new team East Valley. North Valley prevailed 27-22.
Last weekend was an important one in Pennsylvania. Four of the top four high schools competed, and the results helped sort the upper tier of division I. The Valkyries (North Penn) defeated North Bay 36-17, and Downingtown beat State College 26-17.
