Ferndale, Wash. — The USA Women's Eagles 15s National Team are in the Pacific Northwest this week preparing for the WXV1, training at the deWilde Rugby & Polo Fields in Ferndale before moving north to Vancouver, BC to face off with England, France, and Ireland.
The camp at deWilde Fields started Monday and will culminate with a scrimmage Sunday with Canada.
Some major moves this week.
There were only three games where both teams involved were ranked D1AA teams. We had a non-ranked team (Columbia) beating a ranked team (Binghamton). We had a D1AA team beat a D1A-level team (Sam Houston State over Texas A&M), and a team that tied a NCR D1 team (Tennessee).
The NIRA Power Ratings are out now and at first glance there aren't too many surprises.
The Power Ratings for the NCAA Women's D-I programs is what replaces straight standings and serves to compensate for the fact that the season isn't a straight round-robin.
Rugby Colorado's girls 7s league kicked off this past weekend and we're seeing some significant growth in numbers.
Denver East, Lumberjackies, and Fort Collins Hammers went through their games unbeaten.
East beat Highlands Ranch 26-5, tied Lumberjackies, and beat Valor 33-5.
As we have said before, the opening week of rankings is a bit of a guess and relies heavily on last year.
But small changes in teams can make for big changes in their fortunes. SLU's win over Washington University was a good example of that, as was RPI's win over Albany.
