GRR: St. Mary's
Two teams with very high expectations meet up Saturday in Berkeley, Calif., as St. Mary's visits Cal.
These teams are not in the same conference, or even in the same playoffs, but that matters little, as they have been rivals for many years, and there have been times when the Gaels have provided the Bears' only tough competition in the USA.
BYU rode a strong final 50 minutes to overcome an early deficit and beat visiting St. Mary’s 35-26 Saturday evening in Provo, Utah.
The Cougars were down 16-0 at one point - all of those St. Mary’s points coming courtesy of center Dylan Audsley - but rallied late in the first half, and had to rally again in the second half.
The University of Utah pulled off something of an upset Friday night as they defeated #2 St. Mary’s 49-21 in Salt Lake City.
Friday opens up a big weekend for three major college teams, as St. Mary’s arrives in Utah to play the Utes on Friday and the BYU Cougars on Saturday.
St. Mary’s enters a torrid eight days Saturday with a key California Conference clash with GRR #43 Cal Poly, followed by games against #14 Utah and #1 BYU.
The Gaels lost to BYU 32-28 last week, and needed to learn from that game and to get hung up on it at the same time.
