GRR: St. Ignatius
St. Ignatius put Bishop Dwenger to the sword in a non-conference cross-border match Sunday, winning 53-7 on a very windy day in Indiana.
The Cleveland-area SIHS team defended well and controlled field position in excellent fashion in a game where lineouts and kicking for goal were not a good idea given the breeze.
St. Edward beat St. Ignatius on the final play of the game to take the Rugby Ohio Boys Fall 7s, and St. Ed's made it a double, winning the Shield competition, as well.
Rugby Ohio used the regular season to stratify the competitions, with one set of teams playing for the Cup, and a second tier playing for the Shield in the final tournament.
The Boys HS National Championships sparkled at the end, especially with the Herriman vs St. Ignatius single-school final.
Herriman lost a lead and gained it back to win in dramatic fashion 22-17 after losing the last two finals on the final play. In doing so, Herriman overcame a skilled, smart, and enormously brave St. Ignatius team in the program’s first National Championship.
There is one major story in the Single-School Day Two of the Boys HS National Championships, so we'll tell that story.
St. Ignatius won the 2021 Rugby Ohio Boys Super Elite final defeated a dogged Moeller HS side 22-8 Saturday night at Fortess Obetz in the Columbus area.
In a game that seemed to be on a knife edge the whole way, Ignatius took its scoring chances slightly better than Moeller, the Cincinnati side kept the result in doubt until the very end.
