GRR: St. Edward
In a much anticipated clash between perennially highly-ranked high school teams, St. Edward of Ohio defeated Penn HS of Indiana 38-12.
The game, played at Penn's home fields in Indiana, was the first of the season for Penn and the third for St. Edward, and given the long lockdown COVID has imposed on teams throughout the rugby world, that first game back has often been a tough one.
Two significant boys HS rugby results came out of the Midwest this weekend with St. Ignatius taking on St. Xavier of Cincinnati and St. Edward taking on Royal Irish.
This past spring, Saint Ignatius and Saint Edward did not play each other for the Rugby Ohio state championship; it took a pandemic shutdown of the high school rugby season to prevent these two heated rivals from meeting.
Royal Irish surged in the second half to come back and beat St. Edward 28-26 in the opening game for the perennial national title contenders.
The Penn Invite, in its 14th year, saw 21 HS teams from Indiana and nearby states in a preseason effort at the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, IN.
Every team played two short games to see different opponents, with Boys and Girls teams both seeing action.
