GRR: St. Edward
St. Ignatius won the Midwest Boys HS Championship, defeating crosstown rivals St. Edward 17-15 in Sunday's final at the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Ind.
It's difficult to fully represent the rivalry between St. Edward and St. Ignatius in Cleveland.
These two schools are just a few minutes' drive from each other and yet in some way are light years apart. You're an Ed's fan or you're an Iggy fan. You can't be both. Both schools have enjoyed success in a variety of sports and that includes rugby.
St. Edward continues to take steps forward in Ohio, and did so this past weekend with a win over Archbishop Moeller.
St. Ignatius is now at 9-0 after a 3-0 day at the Northern bracket of Rugby Ohio’s fall HS 7s.
The Wildcats beat Highland 25-7 and St. Edward B 48-7 before having to take on their own B side, a game they won 30-0.
"I think our defense really showed," said Aidan Miczak. "We didn’t let mistakes get into our head."
St. Ignatius won their big rivalry game with St. Edward in Cleveland, with the #1-ranked Wildcats taking on the #20 Eagles.
The game was played in front of a crowd of at least 2,000 as this is the big high school sports rivalry in the city, with these two teams carrying a proud rugby tradition and being only a short drive from each other.
