GRR: Rugby New Jersey
Third-year varsity program Hudson Catholic traveled down to Thompson Park to face perennial New Jersey power Christian Brothers Academy.
It was a barnburner of a game, with 92 points scored, and in the end Christian Brothers edged Hudson 48-44.
Morris Rugby, a top rugby club located in Morris County NJ and established in 1998, has expanded to include Women’s, Masters, U12, U14, U16, U18 Boys, and U14 to U18 Girls teams.
Morris Rugby established the first American Flag Rugby Team in 1998 and now is home to 10 programs in Northern NJ.
Although New York and New Jersey award separate 15 titles in the spring, the ranks thin in the fall as other sports contend for athletes’ attention.
It was tough for the Morris U18 girls team to properly celebrate its New Jersey State Championship, as its competition didn’t enter the final at full strength. In fact, Morris was supposed to play South Jersey in Sunday’s final, but the standings runner-up had whittled down to four healthy CIPPed players, and third-place Union competed in its place.
Delbarton School defeated St. Augustine 33-21 Sunday to win the Rugby New Jersey single-school Boys HS championship.
It wasn’t an easy game, and likely the toughest game of the season for a Delbarton team that hadn’t run into too much trouble in league play this season.
