GRR: Queens University of Charlotte
West Point held off a pretty tenacious Queens University Charlotte Saturday in a game Army is using to gear up for the D1A playoffs.
Queens put a bit of a scare into Army and tested the Black Knights with their speed into the breakdown and their kicking game. But a strong early part of the second half saw Army pull away, and then hold on.
One of the great links about playoffs and tours and non-conference games is that you get matchups you'd never plan for.
NCR's D1 semifinal between Penn State and Queens University Charlotte is one of those games.
"Penn State is a storied program with 60 years of history, whereas Queens has not hit the five-year mark," said Queens Head Coach Frank McKinney.
The NIRA playoffs are upon us, with Finals Weekend at West Point set for November 20-21.
Here’s how it’s all looking:
Queens University of Charlotte beat GRR's #1-ranked DIAA team Mary Washington 32-5 to cap off Senior Day and clinch the Chesapeake Conference championship Saturday.
The manner of the Queens victory was impressive. Yes UMW came very close to scoring more, but to hold the Mothers to five points when they had been averaging more than 60 before then is notable.
The top teams keep winning in the Chesapeake, but there is a showdown coming.
Mary Washington hosted Virginia Tech Rugby Saturday and came away 76-12 winners. These two programs have a long and respect-filled rivalry but the COVID shutdown has been tough on the club teams in the Chesapeake.
