GRR: PAC Rugby Conference
UCLA edged Utah 36-34 Saturday to move into 1st in the PAC Rugby Conference - temporarily - and at least ensuring they finish 2nd.
It’s a busy weekend of rugby around the country and especially in Nevada, but there’s the little matter of one of the enduring rivalries in Men’s College Rugby - Cal v St. Mary’s.
BERKELEY, Calif. (Cal Rugby plus additional notes) – A depleted Cal lineup continued to play valiantly, if not flawlessly, Saturday on Witter Rugby Field, beating UCLA, 37-3, to claim a share of the top spot in the PAC Rugby Conference.
Utah and UCLA both won in PAC Rugby Conference action Saturday, but it's the Utes now along atop the standings.
UCLA had all sorts of challenges with a tough-minded Arizona team. The Wildcats may be winless, but they battled. UCLA went up 10-0, but Arizona stormed back to get within three at 15-12. UCLA slotted a late penalty to seal it 18-12.
Cal defeated Arizona State 79-0 Monday to complete the Bears' trip to the Grand Canyon State.
The two-game trip against the Arizona Wildcats the Sun Devils served as the opening of the PAC Rugby Conference season for Cal, and also as a chance for several players to get serious playing time. With the two wins this weekend, Cal is now 2-0, tied with UCLA and Utah.
