GRR: LA Invitational
The University of Alabama surprised many, perhaps even themselves, in winning the LA Invitational men's college bracket Saturday.
The final, played in Dignity Health Sports Park in front of the day's LA Sevens crowd, was an exciting affair, with Alabama coming back from a 12-0 deficit to win 19-12 over New Mexico Highlands University.
Eagle Impact Rugby Academy won the LA Invitational Boys Elite 7s, and also took home the Boys U16 title in competition at the LA Sevens weekend.
EIRA ran out two squads for the Boys Elite, a Red team and a Navy team. However, late injuries took a toll on the roster, and Head Coach Salty Thompson took 20 players to the tournament. More on that in a moment.
With 200 teams at the LA Invitational the LA Sevens weekend, the action was pretty furious throughout.
Here are some notes:
The Boys Elite was pretty tight at the top. With teams in pools of five, but only playing three pool games, EIRA Navy, EIRA Red, and Maui were al 3-0. Atlantis was a close 2-1, losing a tight game with EIRA.
The Carson Lady Colts made it three Girls Southern California 7s championships in a row last weekend, and that success is a harbinger of how the game is evolving.
This program continues to produce, both as the Carson Lady Colts and also as the South Bay Spartans in high-level sevens tournaments.
Atlantis U18 Boys have named their roster for the LA Invitational.
With this tournament featuring four programs slated to play in the NAHS 7s Series this year, this tournament is hugely challenging. Atlantis is in Pool A with Legion Academy, Eagle Impact Academy Red, Stars, and Tempe.
