University of Oregon pulled off a bit of a shocker this past weekend, beating #5-ranked Western Washington 17-15.
This was not expected, as WWU has been on top of the NCRC for quite a while and just beat a strong Boise State side 55-0.
Bowling Green held on to beat Louisville 28-27 in the meeting between the top two teams in the Mid-American Conference DIAA league.
The Falcons ran out to a 21-10 halftime lead thanks to two tries by hooker Ben Young and one by fullback Joe Romshe. Center Joey Apel hit a penalty goal and wing Owen Slimmer landed a rare drop goal.
D1AA gets its share of upstarts each year, which is something we enjoy seeing.
Some teams are poised, we think, to move up.
We keep an eye on Yale and Western Washington and perhaps Arkansas, too.
A note on Kansas State—it was a non-conference loss and we're not going to move them down for that yet. A note on Sam Houston State—their game against Texas State fielded their BearKats XV, which is their 2nd squad. So a close win but not their 1st 15.
Yale pulled off a big win over the weekend in Liberty D1AA, beating previously undefeated Columbia 34-14 to move to 4-1.
While UMass sits 4-0, and have won a close one over Yale, the Bulldogs moved into first while the Minutemen were idle. And that's a good signal about where we are in this conference. Yale has played a bunch of tough teams, and has beaten almost all of them.
