GRR: California Collegiate Conference
In what might have been the most surprising result in DIA rugby this past weekend, UC Santa Barbara defeated Cal Poly 27-22.
UCSB went into the game not ranked in DIA or by Goff Rugby Report, while Cal Poly went into th game ranked #20 in DIA and #27 among all DI teams by Goff Rugby Report.
It's pretty much all over now in the California Conference, as San Diego State put their stamp on the regular season, and Cal Poly slipped at a crucial moment.
SD State bounced back from a humbling loss to Saint Mary's (who have all but sewn up the conference at 4-0) to smash Santa Clara 92-28.
It's not too early to look at the DIA playoff scenarios, and in fact we're almost at a point where the playoff teams could be mostly confirmed.
Here's the rundown:
Rugby East. Penn State won the Rugby East and will go to the Varsity Cup instead. The rest of the teams in Rugby East are playing 7s or the Varsity Cup, so we won't see a Rugby East team in the playoffs at all.
Saint Mary's hasn't officially clinched the California Conference, but the Gaels' 94-7 win over a pretty good Cal Poly team reminds everyone that SMCC knows what they're doing.
Santa Clara defeated UCSB 53-21 Saturday to move to 1-1 in the California Conference.
While San Diego State beat Sacramento State 62-12 to move to 1-0 (SD State Rambles Past Sac State), Santa Clara put themselves in excellent position to challenge for a playoff spot out of the conference.
