The procedure wasn’t expected to be a big deal - wrestlers and rugby players, and Jesse Phillips was both, get their noses bashed around a bit - but it ended up being a very, very big deal.
Westlake HS won the Texas state championship by a point, and it would be fair to say that without Ryan Rees, it wouldn’t have happened like that.
Of course, we could say that about anyone on the Westlake team, but we are picking Rees. The Chaps scrumhalf has had a good example to follow. His brother, Alex, is a star scrumhalf at Arkansas, and also filled that role at Westlake.
Here are a few of the players who had strong performances in Boys HS rugby over the weekend.
Dondre Ross
The co-captain and fullback for Conestoga, he was an attacking force on counterattacks and inserting into the line as Conestoga beat Unionville and Bishop Shanahan in Pennsylvania.
Penn State prop Hope Rogers has been named as the first-ever MA Sorensen Award Winner as the best women’s college rugby player in the country.
The award, presented by the Washington Athletic Club of Seattle, Wash. in conjunction with Goff Rugby Report, will be formally presented at a gala event on June 11.
