Atlantis, Thunderbirds Take Honors in Mount Invitational

Atlantis vs Ohio Aviators.

Atlantis and the Midwest Thunderbirds won The Mount Invitational in impressive fashion Saturday in wet conditions on the campus of Mount St. Mary's.

The Atlantis U19s took the U19 division, which was a straight, five-team round-robin.

Coming into the day 2-0, Atlantis beat their main rival, Miami Jaguares, 20-8 to move to 3-0. They then rapped up the run with a 33-17 win over North Carolina.

Midwest Thunderbirds shut out the Ohio Aviators 22-0 to improve to 2-1, but lost in a thriller 19-17 to the Jaguares.

In the U16s, the Midwest Thunderbirds did not give up a try all weekend. Having beaten North Carolina and the Jaguares via shutouts on Friday, the Thunderbirds beat Ohio Aviators 14-0 in the final round-robin match.

North Carolina lost to the Jaguares in their final match, leaving all three teams not named Thunderbirds at 1-2. North Carolina took 2nd on bonus points.

In the final, then, Thunderbirds beat North Carolina 22-3, giving up the only points of the weekend.

Playmakers Evan Lentz and Coen Luecke were outstanding and communicated well, and worked nicely with fullback Max Hineman. Forwards Eli Poore, Kemper Owens, Jacob Stutter, and Anthony Green were crucial in pressuring the opposition and leading the defensive effort.

Yan Tioua and Charles Miller were powerful presences.

Jaguares beat Ohio to take 3rd.
