Treacy, Tafuna Receive their Awards at 10th WAC Awards Event
Freda Tafuna and Oscar Treacy officially received their Washington Athletic Club College Player of the Year awards Saturday at a gala event in Seattle.
This was the most-attended even in the 10-year history of the awards, with Tafuna receiving her second-straight MA Sorensen Award and Oscar Treacy becoming the first Central Washington University player to receive the Rudy Scholz Award.
Tafuna was there to receive her trophy, supported by a massive family contingent and her Head Coach, Trevor Locke. Former USA prop, Dr. MA Sorensen, was again on hand to present the trophy that bears her name.
In her speech, Tafuna gave the credit to everyone but her ... God, her coaches, her family, and her teammates. However, in a short speech from Locke, the coach pointed out that Tafuna not only played at an elite level once again, but added on the responsibilities of being a captain, a goalkicker, and throwing in at the lineout in the latter stages of games.
These added responsibilities seemed daunting, but Tafuna rose to the challenge brilliantly.
Treacy was not able to attend because he is playing for the USA Falcons team in France. He was present in a video interview, however.
How coach, Todd Thornley, received the trophy on his behalf, presented by the Doug Scholz, Rudy Scholz's grandson. Scholz won two gold medals in rugby, in 1920 and 1924, and also served and was decorated in both World War I (at the age of 22) and World War II (in his 40s).
Scholz's legacy, said Thornley, hit home, and the coach also praised Treacy's commitment to being a team player and one who was not only naturally talented, but someone who worked hard to be better.
Also attending the event were former MA Sorensen Award winners Spiff Sedrick (2020), and Idia Ihensekhien, and the first-ever Scholz Award winner, Dylan Audsley.
