For the fifth year in a row, Divine Savior Holy Angels and Catholic Memorial will meet in the Wisconsin Girls High School State Championship. But there is a whole slate of games ready to take place this Sunday, Oct. 25 in Milwaukee.

The day begins with the DII tournament, and either Kettle Morraine, Muskego, Oak Creek JV, or Vernon will be named champ. And then it’s a steady build to the final:

3 p.m. 7th Place: Fond du Lac vs. DSHA JV
4:30 p.m. 5th Place: Appleton vs. Oak Creek
6 p.m. 3rd Place: Brookfield vs. Pulaski
7:30 p.m. Final: DSHA vs. Catholic Memorial

“With the addition of a new 15s program, growing participation numbers in existing programs like Appleton and Oak Creek, plus several teams with head coaches in their second full year, this year's field of matches appears more competitive than last year,” Catholic Memorial coach John Waliszewski shared.

As for the state title, the Dashers are the long-time owners of that honor, but beyond that, there’s no telling what might evolve in the final. Last year, DSHA had more than 20 seniors on its top side and held off the Crusaders to a single-digit win. Catholic Memorial encountered some hard times over the spring, but have emerged stronger for it this fall.

“We know both sides will come excited to play,” Waliszewski confirmed. “Taking on the perennial champs who are so well coached by John Klein, Kathleen Maloney, and Boris Turcinovic is always a huge challenge. They've been coaching together for years now, and like the young adults they coach, they are very professional in their approach to the game.”

Although DSHA had some major turnover this season, they still have major talent. Senior Meg Walker is the familiar entity. She’s clinical with ball in hand and off the tee, and the fullback is fortunate to be surrounded by talented backs. Upperclassmen Genevieve Ruesch and Claire Brown make a nice halfback pairing, and their distribution skills are integral to the width and pace of the attack. And watch for outside center Tara Sweeney, a lanky and fast striker who has the finishing speed of a back three.

Emily Grambsch will officiate the final in what is sure to be another great game in a long history of great games. Stay tuned.
