West Houston Puts Down Another Marker in Texas

West Houston in yellow, Strake Jesuit in green.

West Houston put in a massive performance, taking down Strake Jesuit 68-12 in Texas league play.

West Houston came out strong and scored within two minutes. West Houston’s pack took control early on, winning the point of contact in the rucks and that control allowed them to run a series of phases through the forwards. The back row of Chauncy Arlo, Hunter Finlay, and Seth Smith ran hard at Strake all game, creating and scoring several tries. Lock was also an imposing presence Julian Orban.

Zane Smith scored multiple tries, charging through the Strake defensive line. Matteo Rousseau stepped up to play outside center and tackled hard to create a solid defense line while adding a try from midfield.

West Houston flyhalf Ben Saunders converted nine of his team's 10 tries for 18 points, including three kicks from the touchline.

Strake came back into the game, testing West Houston and scoring twice and punishing some West Houston indiscipline as WH were yellow-carded for not retreating on penalties and were at one point down to 13. But they kept up the attack.

Strake was missing some starters but did did see some strong performances in their stead. Captain Jake Foster stepped in at flyhalf and led the team in tackles. Flanker Mike Melton and Giacomo Valente also played well for Strake.

Stung somewhat by comments in GRR's pages about maybe not being as good as they appeared, West Houston players and fans wanted to make this a statement game. They did that, and at 2-0, having beaten their toughest club rival and their toughest school-team right, the Lions are nicely poised to run the table.
