Tennessee Downs Ohio State in Early-Season Rivalry Match
The University of Tennessee Rugby Program achieved another clean sweep in our weekend's matches with their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd sides securing victories against their Ohio State counterparts on Saturday in Knoxville.
On a rain-soaked pitch, freshman fullback Vincent Keller opened the scoring with a penalty goal and he later added two conversions on early tries through sophomore hooker Nate Rawls and senior wing Joey Squirlock.
Ohio State fought their way back into the game with two tries to make it 17-10 at halftime.
After cleaning up the errors at lineout and breakdown, the Vols took back the driving seat with No. 8 Roman Funkhouser punching in two tries from close range. 31-10.
Ohio State made an immediate reply scoring a try off a restart mistake to make it 31-17.
Tennessee then camped out in Ohio State's 22 and worked a long series og phases before freshman flanker Jacob Anton dived in for a try.
Wing Pat Carey followed that up, returning a goalline dropout straight down the tramlines to dive in to make it 41-17.
A final minute cross-kick from Vincent Keller found junior center Gabe O'Reilly on the bounce for our final try in the corner to make it 48-17.
Next up for Tennesseethey to host Georgia for their first SCRC conference match this coming Friday night in Knoxville before the Tennessee-Georgia football game. Ohio State continues their series of traditional rivalry pre-conference games with a game at Bowling Green on Saturday.
