ARP Teams Dodge Weather in Round 2

Old Blue kicked off their ARP season with a win but in the other game on the league's slate the weather won out.

It was a tough one for Old Blue, which needed a late penalty try to overcome a tenacious NYAC side 26-24.

Weather delays hit this game as well and lightning ended up calling the game a few minutes early, but the game did get played.

For NYAC, center Sam Sheahan, hooker Aiden Kerr, and reserve forward Beka Verbanidze scored tries while Erwan Nicolas converted all three and added a penalty.

Nicolas was once again very influential for AC.

But, ultimately, Old Blue did enough.

With some new players on the squad and with one player getting married in France meaning some other players were there and not at the game, OBNY had some work to do.

Head Coach Sam Windsor had praise for wings Tony Robinson and Rainier Pieters as they chased kicks well in the weather and won the aerial contests. New flyhalf Keeling Coyle kicked well at flyhalf and one big kick bounced fortuitously for Robinson, who was on his horse and nabbed it to score.

Pieters, who at 6-5 is a big body on the wing, powered his way over for that helped turn the momentum in the second half. This was also the ARP debut for former Wheeling standout Joseph Iye, who carried well and provided smart offloads to keep Old Blue moving and into scoring position.

Up front the pack welcomed newcomers Beamer Murray and former Cal State Long Beach standout Patrick Beattie, who worked well with vets such as Monate Akuei (Old Blue's captain and openside flanker), Bill Whiteside (at lock), and No. 8 Dom Sofe.

It was the work of these players and more than earned a penalty try from a scrum that turned a 24-19 NYAC lead into a 26-24 Old Blue advantage, and that's how the game ended.

"The club is in a great position with lots of competition for starting roles," said Windsor. "We're looking forward to a trip up to Boston to play Mystic this weekend; they have also recruited some Eagle squad members and MLR players looking to stay sharp."

For NYAC, they figured they would be chasing the more experienced teams, but their two losses this season have been by a combined eight points, promising a tight ARP North season.

Mystic River was slated to play White Plains this past weekend, but the lightning was unmerciful and the game was halted just after halftime with White Plains ahead 10-6. This game will need to be completed at some point.

So, with almost two rounds done, here are the standings:

ARP North W L T PA PA PD BT BL Pts
White Plains 1 0 0 34 28 6 1 0 5
Old Blue 1 0 0 26 24 2 1 0 5
NYAC 0 2 0 52 60 -8 1 2 3
Mystic River 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Next week, Old Blue faces Mystic River and White Plains faces NYAC again.

The ARP South kicks off with Atlanta vs Miami.
