Washington Moves HS Sports Schedules, Rugby Hit Hard

The state of Washington has pushed almost all high school sports back to the New Year, which will likely have a profound effect on high school rugby participation in 2021.

Cross country, slowpitch softball, golf, tennis, and girls swimming and diving will all still compete in the fall, but all other fall sports have been moved. Basketball, bowling, gymnastics, cheerleading, wrestling, and boys swimming and diving will compete January 4 to March 7. March 7 to May 2 will see girls soccer, girls volleyball, small-school boys soccer, and small-school boys volleyball compete, as well as football.

Baseball, fastpitch softball, track and field, golf (again(?)), and boys soccer will compete from April 26 to June 27.

Boys and Girls Rugby normally plays from mid-March to the end of May in Washington. That will be in direct competition with soccer and football, making it very hard to recruit athletes who play both sports.

It's not entirely clear what Rugby Washington can do about this, except just hope that enough athletes come out for rugby anyway, but moving their season to May or, conversely, concentrating on fall 7s, might be options to keep participation going. Rugby Washington has produced several men's Eagles in the past ten years or so, with Pat Blair, Scott LaValla, Titi Lamositele, Nick Wallace, Shawn Pittman, David Ainu'u, and Aladdin Schirmer all earning USA caps. On the women's side, Kelsi Stockert, Asinate Serevi, Finau Tamaivena, McKenna Strong, and Lisa Henneman have all played for the USA in recent years.

What's notable is how many different programs have produced those internationals: Chuckanut, Budd Bay, Tacoma, Eastside, Liberty, and Kent.
