Warming Up in DIA Action

Cal and BYU tussled last week. David Barpal photo.

While we talk about some of these games in our latest video, there are some other matchups to discuss.

But before we get into that let's look at the rankings (see graphic at left). There's a bit of movement with the Red River teams getting a bit of love and BYU getting a bump after a last-second loss to Cal.

Behind the scenes, or perhaps between the lines, it does appear that the top five or six are very close, both in terms of the results we've seen so far and the voting.

How did we at GRR vote?

1 Cal; 2 Army; 3 Saint Mary's; 4 BYU; 5 Central Washington; 6 Lindenwood; 7 Life; 8 Navy; 9 Ohio State; 10 Indiana; 11 Penn State; 12 Arkansas State; 13 Colorado State; 14 Texas A&M; 15 UCLA; 15 Arizona; 17 Grand Canyon; 18 Davenport; 19 Colorado; 20 Cal Poly; 21 Michigan State; 22 Utah; 23 Oklahoma; 24 Utah Valley; 25 Santa Clara;

You'll see we have Central Washington higher and we also have Santa Clara popping up at #25.

For one, the service academies get back on the field, both facing off with well-regarded Chesapeake Conference teams. Army is at Queens and Mount St. Mary's at Navy. By no means are these pushovers. Also using DIAA opposition to warm up for the DIA playoffs is Ohio State, which ran a scrimmage against St. Bonaventure last week.

This week it's billed as a full game so here it is listed.

BYU vs Utah is usually a massive game on the calendar but Utah is in a bit of a rebuilding phase and BYU is really strong. The Cougars are heavily favored. And then we've got Cal at UCLA, which is a bit of the same story but UCLA might be further along in the rebuilding. Cal is favored but it will be interesting to see how potent UCLA's attack is.

Coach quotes:

"We are excited to host a powerhouse in Collegiate Rugby this Saturday at Tomlinson," said Central Washington Head Coach Todd Thornley. "They are an extremely well coached, talented team that make you pay if you are not competing for the full 80 minutes. For us, we just want to put out a performance that we are proud of and work hard on both sides of the ball for the full 80 minutes. In the moments we have done that this year, we have played some really promising rugby. We look forward to having a big crowd on Saturday and cannot wait for the challenge that lies ahead."

"Look, a new opponent, a new week, but we're just focused on us," said Arizona Head Coach Sean Duffy after a 60-13 loss to CWU last week. "We know A&M will come in physical having seen a few teams in that conference over the years so we will need to bring it to get back in the win column."

"We have tons of respect for the Bruins and we're anticipating a hard match," said Cal Head Coach Jack Clark said. Our focus needs to be on our own development. Naturally, we want to find a way to win, but just as importantly, we need to continue our improvement as a team. We have a ways to go to reach our potential."
