VT Tackles ALS in Memory of Team Mom

Virginia Tech prop Abbey Coleman was with her team when her mother died.

She returned from her mother's funeral to be handed paperwork stating that her team had raised about $1,000 in her mother's name to be donated to the ALS Association. Almost a year after Cindy Coleman's death, Virginia Tech is attempting to do it all over again.

After two years of defying her diagnosis, Cindy Coleman passed away from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis on April 18, 2015. She had fought through her six month prognosis to spend more time watching her daughters grow. When Abbey Coleman traveled to her hometown of Richmond for the memorial service, her team wanted to still support her from afar. When she returned to her team, she said she was awed to see how they honored her mother.

"The team really rallied behind me. It was a great support system to have around me," Abbey Coleman said.

On April 16, 2016, Virginia Tech will be hosting a round robin tournament in honor of Cindy Coleman with all proceeds from the tournament and previous donations going to the ALS Association. The goal: to raise as much money as possible and to exceed last year's donation sum.

ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affect motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. When these neurons degenerate, the body's ability to control muscle movements decreases which leads to muscle atrophy. That muscle atrophy can then lead to harsher symptoms such as losing the ability to move and breathe.

In an effort to raise money to defeat this life-threatening disease, Appalachian State, Virginia Military Institute, and Virginia Tech will play in a round robin tournament this Saturday, where Virginia Tech will be selling wristbands that say "Tackling ALS."

Although registration for the round robin is closed, Virginia Tech is still accepting open donations through the link below:
