The University of California, San Diego shut out the University of California, Santa Barbara in a rematch game, walking away with an 89-0 win.

After the last UCSD v UCSB game, UCSD coach Kirstin Hartos knew she needed to focus on the defensive aspect of game play in order to improve the point differential in Saturday’s match up.

“We had a couple of defensive lapses during our first match that we wanted to improve on in the re-match, and [we] did a good job creating turnovers with pressured defense to keep the off the scoreboard,” Hartos said.

UCSD used the game to also work on utilizing space to better attack UCSB’s defense. UCSB caused some trouble for UCSD in set pieces yet couldn’t capitalize on UCSB’s minor mistakes. There were instances where UCSD could have gotten the ball wide faster or switched angles to throw off their opposition. Hartos believes that although there was a large point differential, UCSD’s work is not done.

“Both units performed well given the circumstances, especially with many forwards playing out of position due to injuries or midterms or rookies playing significant minutes for the first time,” Hartos said. “Overall, we did a much better job moving the ball wide against SB than we did in our game the weekend before versus CSUN.”

Scrumhalf Wing Ly had a heyday against UCSB with six tries throughout her 80 minute play time. Center Teigan MacDonald was also a point leader with four tries. Center Jaylin Stevenson and flyhalf Di-an Duong each dotted down two tries a piece. Wing Saanjh Ombogo had a powerful strike to add another five points onto the board. Black made six conversions and Stevenson tacked on one more to round out the score.

UCSD will be facing UCLA tomorrow at 11am where Hartos hopes the women will execute the basics and stick to the game plan while keeping the pressure on the defense.
