Texas Update: Two Teams Set The Standard

It's a competitive field in Rugby Texas this year and this past weekend's results change nothing about that.

Cy Fair won their second game in league play with a close victory over St. Pius X, while Katy also has that same 2-0 record against the same opponents, St. Pius X and St. Thomas. However, Katy was busy playing the Kansas City Junior Blues this week (a 40-24 loss).

Allen moved to 3-0 after eking out a tight 31-29 win over the North Texas Barbarians in a game that, regrettably, devolved into some off-the-ball stuff. Still, Allen remains a formidable team. Rock Rugby, one-point losers to Westlake over a week ago, beat Dallas Jesuit 17-10 this week.

The point is, teams are close. Two of these are perhaps percolating up to the top. One of those is Lake Travis. After beating Plano 46-14, and Plano is no walkover, Lake Travis could well be once again the top single-school team in the state.

The other is The Woodlands. Having beaten St. Pius X and Strake Jesuit, Woodlands took apart the KC Jr. Blues 55-0 on Saturday. Now, you be fair, this was KC's first game of the season, they were on the road, and they hadn't been training a great deal. But even if you take this factors into account, and say maybe that a little more time prevents two tries from being scored and gets the Blues over the line twice, that's still a 39-14 for Woodlands.

All-everything No. 8 Tom Dixon scored two tries against KC, and flyhalf Alex Clarke kicked seven conversions and wo penalty goals, with no misses.

This Texas league season is notoriously difficult. With staggered spring breaks and various tours, sometimes a team can go weeks without a league game. Momentum can shift in that time. Woodlands is trying to fix that by playing a lot of rugby. Thursday they host St. Thomas in a league match and then drive out to Tennessee to play a really good Germantown team. They are there Sunday, too, so if anyone in Tennessee wants to test themselves against a strong team, they're available.
