Rugby Ohio 7s Kicks Off

The two St. Joe's teams went a combined 5-0.

St. Ignatius and St. Joseph led the way in the opening weekend of Rugby Ohio's fall 7s.

St. Joe's Academy girls program ran out two teams. The St. Joe's A side beat Highland 20-0 and Brecksville 50-0, not allowing a point.

The St. Joseph's Purple side played three gams, giving up just the one tri. They beat Perrysburg 41-0 and John Marshall 21-0. Brunswick pushed St. Joe's but ultimately fell 17-7.

Perrysburg entered two teams and their A side beat Brecksville, Brunswick, and Hudson, allowing just three tries in those games. Brunswich, losing 12-5, was easily the closest.

In the boys competition, St. Ignatius fielded three sides. Their A side shut out three opponents, beating Hudson 26-0, Avon Lake 54-0, and St. Ignatius C 30-0.

Both Hudson and St. Edward ended the day 2-1, with St. Edward beating Perry A and St. Ignatius C, but falling 19-0 to Hudson. Along with their loss to SIHS and their victory over St. Ed's, Hudson beat Perrysburg 17-5.

The St. Ignatius B side was also 2-1, beating Avon Lake and St. Edward B, but losing 10-0 to Highland.

The Boys competition was split between North and South. In the South teams assembled at St. Xavier HS in Cincinnati, and the hosts showed very well.

St. X beat Dublin 40-7, Moeller 24-0, and Marysville 47-0 to go 3-0 on the day.

St. X is experienced, athletic, and they have depth. Head Coach Mark Weidner said his team is 12 deep with no dropoff.

"And we can go another 10 deep with quality players," he added. That was borne out in with the results from the other St. Xavier games. The Blue team (one of Weidner's two second sides) went 2-0-1 with wins over Dayton Northern Force, Moeller Blue, and a tie with ... St. Xavier's White side. That St. Xavier White team went 2-1-1, with that tie against the other St. X team, a loss to Moeller Blue, and victories over Walnut Hills and Northern Force.

So the three St. Xavier teams played 10 teams, two of which was a tie between themselves, and in the reamining eight they went 7-1.
