Wheeling Jesuit, Penn State, Kutztown, and Army are all still undefeated in the Rugby East after Penn State won two games this weekend and the other three won one each.

Wheeling Jesuit slammed West Virginia 72-12 on Friday. Flyhalf Allan Hanson, fresh off being named Wheeling Jesuit’s male athlete go the week, scored two tries and converted four, while adding a penalty goal for 21 points on his own. Andrew Waggoner also scored two tries, as did Peter Malcolm as WJU weathered a strong start from WVU before pouring on the points.

Also on Friday, Penn State, which split their team for the two games this weekend, defeated St. Bonaventure 69-24. Hard-charging lock Ryan McNulty scored three tries, two in the first half and one late in the second half. Mike Dabulas came on in the second half and scored two, as did Chris Burian in the first half. Thomas Del Pino, Joe Kelly, Robert Irimescu, and Jimmy Haley all touched down while Jimmy Ronan converted seven tries.

Then Penn State turned right around and shut out Buffalo 66-0. PSU led 35-0 at halftime as youngsters Kyle Crawford and Tom Caprioti got the show going and Keefer Key scored two. Jack McLean added the fifth, with Dabulas, getting the start at flyhalf, converting all five.

In the second half, Dabilas scored one of his own, and Malcolm May, just back from injury and on as a sub, went over. Key then scored his fourth and fifth before Leon Patel-Champion finished it off. Dabulas converted eight out of ten for a personal tally of 21.

Also winning on Saturday was Kutztown, which controlled Iona very well to win 77-14. And Army beat Delaware 81-5.

Head Coach Matt Sherman ran out several younger players, with recent Jesuit HS (Sacramento) standout Bailey Abercrombie showing very well and scoring three tries on the day. Jake Lachina scored two and so did Jeff Malm-Annan. Freshman scrumhalf Jack Royston (Gonzaga HS) did well also.

“I think we played with the higher precision, speed and aggression we’ve been looking for, which was pleasing,” said Sherman. “We will need to continue that path of constant improvement into next week’s very formidable challenge against Penn State.”

Next week will be a big weekend in the conference, as Penn State visits Army, and Kutztown visits Wheeling Jesuit.
