The USA Women's 7s team is on the verge of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games after sweeping their Pool A games in the Amsterdam 7s Friday.

The Eagles knew going in that they needed to stay ahead of France and England, and they still need to do that, but Friday's impressive display put them in prime position to claim one of the coveted top four places in the Women's Sevens World Series - and therefore an automatic place in Rio 2016.

The Eagles started off the day against South Africa, and paced by two tries from Victoria Folayan, they cantered away with a 26-7 victory. Then they torched Fiji for two tries in the first two minutes and ran away 36-14. Six different Eagles crossed the goal line in the victory. So that left New Zealand, the team that had destroyed the USA in the USA 7s final in March. This time, amazingly, it was the USA that was dominant. And lest you think New Zealand selected down for this game, the lineup that scored 52 against the USA in Atlanta differed from the Amsterdam starting seven by one person.

But once again, the USA started well, and kept up the pressure to go up 15-0 at halftime. Lauren Doyle scored three tries, including scores in the first minute of each half, Kristen Thomas scored two, and Katie Johnson one as the Eagles thumped the defending champions 34-5.

New Zealand, however, finished 2-1 and are in the Cup Quarterfinals, and that was enough for them to clinch the 2014-15 World Series title, as well as a place in Rio 2016. Also clinching places in the 2016 Olympic Games was Canada, which went 3-0 in Pool C, and Australia, Pool B winners.

Now it comes down to Saturday. The USA is tied with France in points, and is just barely ahead of England. Their task is to finish higher than those two nations. If they do that, then they are in the 2016 Olympic Games by clinching 4th in the Series.

Things are looking good for the Americans, as they are paired with Spain (2-1 on Friday) in the quarterfinals. This is a team the Eagles should beat. France, however gets to play Canada, who still can get past Australia for 2nd in the Series. Meanwhile, England faces those self-same Australians. It is quite possible that the USA can beat Spain, and France and England lose to their opponents in the quarters, and that will be enough to put the USA into the 2016 Games.
