North Carolina HS Latest

In North Carolina, the single-school teams now know who is in the final, and the open club teams know who is in the semis.

Among the single-school teams, Fort Myers defeated South Meck 43-19 Friday night for the right to play in the North Carolina state championship.

The Fort Myers Mustangs went into the semifinal 6-2 in the regular season, while the Sabres were also 6-2.

Myers park got off to a quick lead, scoring off the kickoff. South Meck quickly capitalized off Myers Parks mistakes, tying the score up 7-7. Myers Park came back to make it 14-7 with good execution of phases, and a series of powerful pick-and-go moves.

As the game wore on, Myers Park's deep three did well to counter South Meck's kicking game, and set up tries in the latter stages to finish it off 43-19.

The #1 seeded Hough Huskies, unbeaten going into the semi against Providence, ran out 41-19 winners of the Panthers on Saturday. Hough open the game with a early try, but the defenses ruled for most of the rest of the first half. Just before the break, Providence tied the game 7-7 off an eightman pick.

In the second half, the game opened up somewhat, and that worked well for the Huskies as they used their kicking game to put Providence under pressure and their speed to chase the kicks. Hough won 41-19.

So the North Carolina Single-High School State Championship is set.  Myers Park will play Hough High School next Friday night, under the lights, with a 8pm kickoff.

As for the open league, the big games were Chapel Hill against Charlotte Catholic, and Charlotte Tigers against North Raleigh. A win by the Tigers and a loss by the Highlanders would put the Tigers into the top four. And that's exactly how it panned out. Charlotte Catholic defeated Chapel Hill 35-7. The Tigers beat North Raleigh 81-7.

The Tigers have been on a bit of a roll after revamping their offense last month. Scrumhalf Peter Smith scored three tries for th Tigers, and No. 8 Jonathan Rubin, flanker Isaac Johnson, and center Jin Jung all scored twice.

So Charlotte Catholic ends the regular season 1st at 9-0. Union County is 2nd at 8-1, the Raleigh Rattlesnakes 3rd at 7-2, and the Tigers take 4th at 6-3. All four will be in the playoffs.
