More State Champs to be Named

The Ruckettes could end the day with two Virginia titles.

The girls high school league season is coming to an end, but there are still a handful of states that have yet to name their champion. Be sure to check out the 2014-15 champions that were already named at the end of the article.

North Central is looking for its 10th Indiana title, and advanced to the final with a 37-0 quarterfinal win over Pike and 53-15 semifinal victory over Arsenal Tech. Penn, which finished 3rd at the Midwest championship, beat Westfield 24-0 before taking down 2014 finalist Warsaw 34-29 in the final four. Penn won state titles in 2003-04 but hasn't returned to the championship since then.

"Both playoff games we've had this season against Pike and Arsenal Tech have been good games," North Central coach Suzi Dillon indicated. "The scores don't reflect how hard they all fought.

"I've heard Penn has some good players, and we haven't played them yet, so that always puts us in that territory of the unknown," Dillon looked to the championship game. "I will say it's hard having the game this late in the season because we are now fighting against graduation events more than anything now. Hopefully we can bring our best on Saturday."

The Virginia championship weekend will see a lot of blue-and-orange jerseys, as West End is sending three sides to Nokesville for trophies. The Ruckettes, which are fresh off a respectable showing at DI nationals, will look to defend its title against Fairfax Police. The DII side will take on Loudoun for the North Cup. At day's end, the West End boys' team will be competing in its respective championship.

St. Joseph's Academy also has multiple chances for hardware. The A side, which finished 6th at DI nationals, will play Hudson for the DI title. The reigning champ defeated Highland by a whopping 75-0 in the semifinals, while fellow finalist Hudson knocked off Lakewood 22-0. St. Joe's B side will play Shaker Heights for the DII trophy. The pair were the only two teams that competed with regularity throughout the season.

Rugby Connecticut, which currently fields four teams, is hosting a round-robin tournament this weekend to determine its state champion. It will come down to Cheshire, New London, Simsbury or

After Saturday, Minnesota will be one step closer to naming a state champion. The favorites to advance? Reigning champ Armstrong, which plays Minnetonka in the semis, and Hopkins, which plays North Suburban. Irondale High School will host the Saturday, June 6 championship.
