Mira Costa Wins SoCal HS 7s

Mira Costa and LA players pose together.

The Mira Costa Rugby team completed the sweep of the Southern California Championships by winning the Southern California 7s Championship title on Sunday at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa.

This marks the first year in the brief history of the Mira Costa Rugby program in which the Mustangs won not only the 15s title but now also the 7s title.

The Costa Mustangs looked very good on the day, defeating San Fernando 33-0 and Tri-Cities (Oceanside) 49-5 in pool play. Jordan Fischer scored repeatedly from long range, and was there in support to take the offloads, as well. Captain Justus Tavai and his brother Jonah provided physical running as well as did David Arredondo, Blake Curtin and Alec Oshita.

Also looking good on the day was the Los Angeles Rugby Club, which was made up of players from Palos Verdes and St. John Bosco. LA rebounded from a rough go at the Belmont Shore tournament, beating San Clemente 22-14 and Belmont Shore 26-0 in pool play.

So that set up the semi between LA and Mira Costa, teams coached by the same man, Duke Dulgarian.

It was a tough, well-played game, Mira Costa took an early lead with some nice decision-making from Harrison Dulgarian and Brandon Espeso setting up Justin Goring and Kaden Loversky. Costa scored one try covering over 70 meters, with five different players touching the ball through nine passes. LA mounted a second-half comeback, but Mira Costa held on 33-12.

Los Angeles ended up playing Carlsbad for 3rd place, and despite being a player down in the final minutes, came back from nine points down to win.

In the Cup Final, the Mustangs were just too much, leading 14-7 at halftime and then exploding for three more converted tries and a 35-7 victory.

from 70+ meters out using 9 passes to 5 different players while covering the 70 meters.  Some of the passes were truly a marvel as a couple were just laid up in the air as a Mustang would run onto the ball at pace.  It was loose play at its finest.  The final score was 33-12 and set up a Championship rematch from a month ago against the Rhinos from Irvine.
