GRR HS School Team Rankings Week 7

Oceanside enters Top 50. Alex Goff photo.

What a weekend!

So many results forced us to shift things around.

Top 10

It is clear that Jesuit, De La Salle, and St. Francis in Northern California are very close. We're got Jesuit at #10 right now because of their latest win over St. Francis (and despite their losses in Southern California) but it's a shaky #10 right now. The Marauders play De La Salle this weekend.

Xavier bumps up after a very clinical win and there's talk that this is a strong Xavier team. Georgetown Prep never goes to HS Nationals (which is too bad; they should) but they play in a very tough league. This past weekend they played Rugby PA school team St. Joe's and won fairly comfortably, and with some of the other teams near #10 losing or not playing, they get a bump to #9.

That Middle Group

Teams ranked around #13 to #25 or so are often the ones moving around the most. This week was strange because five of those teams lost games. Often at this stage in the season that can precipitate a big drop, but they were losses to strong teams, or we have made the judgment that it's a move up for the victor, not a big punishment for the defeated.

Major Movers

St. Edward won games, and while they were short-form tournament games, we got a chance to watch them and objectively feel they could be quite strong this year. So from a "who knows?" #44 they move to a "watch out" #26. Rye was kind of in the same situation, and here they tied Raptor, who we rate fairly highly, on the road, in their first game. Count us sufficiently impressed.

SLUH had told us they had a solid team and while they lost their games in the Lindenwood Tournament, they were close enough to warrant inclusion into the Top 50. Lake Travis is a weird one. Last week, after a string of sort-of results, they lost to Dallas Jesuit 12-3. Hmm ... what does that mean? Well a week later they showed it by beating St. Pius X ... by a point. Good enough. Back into the Top 50 they go.

Oceanside. We confess we didn't pay much attention to Oceanside, and in addition we weren't sure what kind of quality we'd see from South Carolina in general. What we saw was that they could play, and as state champs, deserve to be in the Top 50 anyway.

St. Martin's results continue to be impressive in their preseason and they join the Top 50 also.
