Gamebreakers in Men's D2 College This Week

It was kind of a wild weekend in Men's DII college rugby as we saw a few surprise results.

But surprise results usually mean some players rose to the summit in terms of their performances. We have a wide range of Gamebreakers this week—scorers, tacklers, forwards, backs—and they all deserve some accolades.

Colton Moyer, IUP

Moyer was a force in the forwards for IUP in their shutout win over West Virginia. Winning lineout (thus making IUP’s kicking game that much more useful), making tackles, and winning rucks, he set the tone for IUP’s victory.

Hayden Rudkin, UW-Platteville

The openside flanker and is more of a hybrid player who slides between being a forward and a back. He had two 30-40 meter gains and made every tackle that came his way including a try saving tackle.

Aidan Guarnuccio, Scranton

Sparking Scranton’s season-opening win over Shippensburg, Guarnuccio formed part of an effective halfback combo, scored a couple of tries, and ran the attack well enough to be named player of the game.

Will Anderson, Xavier

The Xavier No. 8 was a big part of Xavier’s shutout of Marshall with some massive runs, perfect and teeth-rattling tackling, and general work around the field.

Jentry Staack, David Randall, Northern Iowa

The 9 10 combo from Randall and Stack is gonna be one to watch for the years to come. I’d keep and eye on the boys from Norwalk Nick Marker and Ian Hibbert as well, they have already made a ton of big plays, Nick being one of the most explosive players I’ve seen in a while.

JJ Greatrex, Middle Tennessee State

A leader and hugely effective center for MTSU, Greatrex scored two tries in their defeat of Ole Miss.

Ollie Kennett, Furman

Not a stranger to these pages, the Furman flyhalf scored 24 points in his team’s win over Appalachian State and was the architect of several other scores.

Lorenzo Lelli, Bautista Saint Bonnet, Thomas More

The two Argentinian back-row freshmen have jumped out in the opening weeks, clearing out at rucks, making steals, and cleaning up bad possession and troublesome ball all around the field.

Tommy Tavrides, Marquette

The backs captain and flyhalf for Marquette, Tavrides ran an offense that upset Wisconsin-Whitewater and, crucially, was a defensive leader who ensure his backs were in the Warhawks' faces all day.

Nolan Buckley, UMass Lowell

The Lowell No. 8 was a dynamo on both sides of the ball as his team opened the season with a win over Bentley. Buckley's powerful runs with the ball, his leadership of the forwards in the breakdown and getting go-forward, and his defense were all excellent, and much-needed for a team that lacks experience.

Jacob Paule, US Merchant Marine Academy

In a game that Kings Point won 19-8 over RPI, Paule's defensive efforts, especially in and around the breakdown, were a major reason USMMA won.
