Finals Time For College Men

Queens University in action Fall of 2019.

The fall comes down to this as Men’s DIAA and DII college teams crown champions.

For the Men’s DII, this is the national championship—there is no spring playoff. For everyone else, it’s a fall championship with a spring championship for those who finish league play in March and April.

Men's College Historical Champions

Here’s how it looks:

Saturday, December 7

2PM Eastern Time: Queens University Charlotte vs Norwich University (DII Semi)

They've Seen It All Before: Tested Norwich Ready For Semis

Overtime, Comebacks Highlight Men DII QFs

Queens and Norwich are both varsity teams. Queens is looking strong and healthy and will embrace what is a battle of different styles of play. Queens likes their chances in dry-ish conditions and with a chance to run the ball.

Norwich has played smart tactical rugby all season, and did so perfectly in the earlier playoff rounds, eschewing the flashier open-field play to pound it with the forwards. Their overtime in over Furman was predicated on the pick-and-go. It didn’t matter what the number was on your back, you were going vertical.

4PM Eastern Time: UMS&T vs Wisconsin-Whitewater (DII Semi)

Warhawks Scrape And Scrap To The Semis

The Numbers Add Up: S&T Leads Charge For Tech Schools

This is a clash of two club teams, with one, Whitewater, very used to making it this far. The old adage is, forwards decide who wins, and the backs by how much. But both of these teams have very good forward packs, and it could be, then, that whichever team can beak out something in the open field will win.

Sunday, December 8

11AM Eastern Time: Western Michigan vs Iowa Central CC (DIAA Final)

Time To Knock The Door Down: WMU's Joey Backe

Inch-by-Inch, Iowa Central Chases Title

This game might well follow that adage about the forwards and the backs. Iowa Central’s backs are really, really strong, and their goalkicker, Rhys Smith, is money. So WMU has to dominate possession and, as flanker Joey Backe said, defend clean. It’s all about that breakdown.

1PM Eastern Time: Men’s DII 3rd-place match

We’re thinking this will be S&T against Queens, but it’s not settled.

3PM Eastern Time: Men’s DII Final

We’ve picked Norwich vs Wisconsin-Whitewater here, but while Whitewater is definitely favored over S&T, Queens could be here over Norwich. Either way, it’s going to be a tough game to pick.
