East Carolina Bulls Through Southern

East Carolina finishes up their Southern Rugby Conference league season with a game against Elon Saturday, with a chance to go undefeated.

Their first five games could hardly have gone any better, as ECU has outscored opponents 187-22, including a most impressive 36-5 defeat of their closest rivals in the Southern Conference North Division, Appalachian State.

“We just play really well as a team,” said ECU fullback Thomas LaMuraglia. “We started to play a little better during last spring and in the summer playing 7s. It wasn’t so much the open-field play of 7s but the teamwork that helped us.”

LaMuraglia has had some good days in the #15 jersey, but he says his main success has been inserting into the backline so he can pass off to wing Brandon Sorkin. With the overlaps created, Sorkin has been a deadly finished.

“I just have to pass him the ball,” said LaMuraglia.

Meanwhile, up front, No. 8 and captain Gareth Davies is the leader of a unified front eight. But, said LaMuraglia, ECU’s return to the top of the standings is all about team.

“It’s because we’re playing as a team that we’re winning, simple as that.”
