Deep South Finalists Set

Hurricanes and Barbarians pose Saturday after the teams played their semifinal.

The finalists for the Deep South HS Rugby Championship are set as the Bayou Hurricanes and Jesuit of New Orleans Blue Jays both won semifinals.

On Saturday in Raceland, La., the top-seeded Hurricanes hosted the NOLA Barbarians.
Bayous got on the scoreboard early with a try from outside center Zavier Triplett. The conversion was blocked, leaving the score at 5-0. Bayou pressured the Barbarians once more and lock TJ Folse would touch it down next with the conversion made by scrumhalf Hunter Breit. The Hurricanes started to open up the game a bit and both fullback Brandon Sanders and wing Demery Rener raced in for tries. Breit converted both for a 26-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Hurricanes picked up where they left off and captain and scrumhalf Breit scored in the corner. wing Alvin Delaune, outside center Shane Wright, and Triplett, who moved from outside center to inside when Wright came on as a sub, all touched down. Each try was converted by Breit and the Hurricanes rolled 52-0.

The Barbarians played a spirited game and worked hard. But the young NOLA team was overmatched on the day. Hurricanes flanker James Williams and NOLA Barbarians flyhalf Drake Rothelle were recognized as players of the game.

The Hurricanes will face Jesuit of New Orleans, which beat defending regional champs St. Paul's on Monday 28-12.

The final will be held on Saturday, April 30 at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans.
