D1 Men's College Season Already Ramping Up

Cincinnati had a solid season last year and has some new blood, too. Photo Roger Mazzarella.

the Men's DIAA, D1 Club, and DIA seasons are almost upon us, with a few teams in action this weekend just to warm up.

Unfortunately, Western Michigan's meeting with Michigan State isn't happening, and it was probably a week too early for both squads. But we will see Cincinnati travel to Michigan this weekend. For UC, this is an fall to take note of. The Bearcats have several talented and experienced freshmen from accomplished Ohio HS programs such as Archbishop Moeller and St. Ignatius. Head Coach Kyle Roche is happy to get two games for his squad and get everyone on the field early.

"We are definitely excited about the group of freshmen we have coming in, joining the five sophomores who were on the first side last fall and spring," said Roche. "We should have a great group of young and talented players that can grow together this season and the next few years."

But, he added, "a lot of the guys are still new to the system, having only a handful of trainings under their belt.  But we are excited to finally see them in some game action."

Also in action this weekend Iowa Central CC at Iowa. Both sides have big plans for this fall and this is a nice in-state rivalry match for two sides in difference conferences—Iowa Central is in the new Big Rivers Conference and Iowa remains in the Heart of America, which usually plays its 15s in both the fall and the spring.

Iowa Central just finished up their preseason hell week. Situps by the lakeside:

Later on this week AIC will face UMass in a warmup match for both. AIC is in an interesting situation in that they didn't have a massive recruiting class. They are going to win or lose with their returners.

We will see the first conference games in a week, when Iowa Central hosts Marian in that new all-school-supported Big Rivers Conference. The Big 10 will open up with Notre Dame at Ohio State.
