Big Action for Girls Bracket at Warrior 7s

Doylestown won the Warrior 7s girls bracket in a three-team round-robin Sunday.

Held in Reading, Pa. and hosted by the Berks County rugby club, as well as being sponsored by Next Phase Rugby, the Warrior 7s had two youth brackets and a boys HS bracket as well. For information on those divisions see here>>.

The girls bracket was going to have four teams but a little COVID outbreak meant Aspetuck wasn't able to compete. Instead it was Doylestown, Downingtown, and Conestoga in action.

Conestoga was not expected to win but ended up tying Doylestown in their opening game. Conestoga was led by some very smart play and a high work rate by captain Elsa Burgo.

Downingtown played a powerful, physical game and at their best used those hard support lines to score tries. They pushed Doylestown close in a 14-12 result for Doylestown and it looked like the round-robin would be nailbiting throughout.

But as the day wore on the stronger teams started to use their depth and finished a bit stronger.

Doylestown beat Conestoga 29-17 in the rematch, while Downingtown beat Conestoga 19-5. That put Downingtown at 1-1 with Doylestown and Conestoga still to go. Doylestown won the rematch to finish 3-0-1, and Downingtown then beat Conestoga to finish 2-2.

Leading the way for Doylestown was a group of players such as Maddy Doyle and Liz Johnston that played defense and hit rucks.

They opened things up for Sydney Haddon, who used her pace and nose for the tryline to earn tournament MVP honors.

Haddon repeatedly got the ball with space but usually one or two defenders taking the angle to cut her off. They couldn't catch her.
