Maryland Exiles Win State

The Maryland Exiles had defeated North Bay 39-15 the win their fourth-straight Maryland State Boys HS Championship. The Maryland Exiles had won the league match against North Bay 22-7, but this was a new North Bay squad that was fresh off their tour to Ireland and eager to demonstrate the lessons that they had learned there.

Played under beautiful skies on fast grass at Warner’s Rugby Farm, the game promised to be exciting with two good sides competing.

The Exiles struck first after kickoff moving the ball forward through multiple phases until Fullback Chris Minor was able to touchdown a converted try. What looked like it might be an Exiles blowout was turned around quickly. North Bay frustrated the Exiles throughout the game at the contact point, and multiple Exiles penalties led to an unconverted try for North Bay by Cole McDonough. Game on. (Maryland Exiles 7 -- North Bay 5)

The Exiles struck next with a kick to the corner. As North Bay struggled to come to grips with the ball, the Exiles were able to turn gain possession and bring the ball back across the field for another converted try by Minor. On the next possession however, the Exiles suffered the first of their four yellow cards for infringements in the tackle area (five total for the day). Eventually DJ Burke was able to lead a resurgent North Bay team and punch his way through the line for unconverted try (Maryland Exiles 14 -- North Bay 10)

The Exiles quickly answered by pushing the ball immediately to the North Bay goal. The Exiles were able to drive the ball over goal line, but the scrappy North Bay defenders were able to keep Exiles Hooker Javier Quiros from grounding the ball. On the ensuing scrum however, Scrumhalf David Canonse was able to shift the ball wide to Freshman Wing Travis Levy, who has been getting recruited by Penn State, Virginia Tech and multiple other schools for football. Levy was able to demonstrate his running skills and skirt the opposition defense to touch down for an unconverted try. (Exiles 19 – North Bay 10)

On the ensuing kickoff, the Exiles were able to produce a bit of magic. North Bay's Fullback kicked the ball up field and directly into the hands of Exiles Flanker Robby Happy. Happy drew a defender and passed the ball to Levy who used the space to slice his way through the North Bay cover defense for his second try of the day. (Exiles 24 North Bay 10)

This score was negated by North Bay just before halftime. The Exiles were penalized again for contact area infringements and given their fourth yellow card offense giving possession, numbers and territorial advantage to North Bay, who were able to capitalize pounding away at the Exiles line. After multiple attempts, North Bay was rewarded with an unconverted try by Andrew Visconti (Halftime Exiles 24 -- North Bay 15)

In the second half, the Maryland Exiles changed their tactics. Instead of contesting the tackle area on defense, the Exiles conceded the contact area to North Bay and focused on being first to the point of contact at the next tackle area. This change was rewarded five minutes into the period when Junior Flanker and Team Captain Archie Cullen was able to intercept a pass and score an unconverted try. (Maryland Exiles 29 -- North Bay 15)

The Maryland Exiles were able to close out the scoring and get some breathing room with tries from Flanker Robby Happy and Prop Charlie Siarkis to put the game away in the final ten minutes. Final: Maryland Exiles 39 -- North Bay 15)
