GRR: College Men
Here’s a quick rundown of the Varsity Cup games this weekend.
BYU smacked Arizona State 113-8 Saturday night to finish off the day's VC games.
Dartmouth College shocked pretty much everyone Saturday in beating Penn State in the opening round of the Varsity Cup.
“Nobody thought we would win,” said Dartmouth Head Coach Gavin Hickie, without a shade a bitterness. “Nobody, that is, except us.”
The Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference championship will be decided Saturday as Western Washington hosts the University of Washington.
These two teams have already met, when on March 5 Western came away with a 26-17 victory. Aside from a loss to Gonzaga when they played two away games in two days, that was the closest result for WWU in conference play.
Playoff positions and various championships are on the line in a key weekend in Men's DI-level College Rugby.
The first round of the Varsity Cup opens up this weekend with eight games, of which few are seriously in doubt. Here's our take:
BYU v Arizona State. BYU's forwards are punishing in defense and their backline can run, can tackle, and can invent something on the fly. Arizona State can break open a try or two, but against the Cougars, that's all. BYU wins.
