GRR: College Men
This was the first big weekend in the Liberty Conference, in both the NCR D1 and D1AA divisions.
D1AAUMass opened their account in impressive fashion with an 88-5 defeat of Niagara. Yale, which had a solid 2024-25 season, beat UConn 24-12.
But perhaps the notable results were Boston College 71-21 over Buffalo, and Babson 42-22 over Columbia.
The Big 10 is getting going slowly as we get one more conference clash and a couple more non-conference games.
Wisconsin took on Michigan State in a game between two Big 10 teams but one that won't count in the conference standings. This was a good showing for the Badgers as they won 35-14.
It's a slow burn in early September for D2 College Rugby.
The major contenders for playoff rugby aren't going to play each other, for the most part, for a while.
But we do have a couple of cross-conference matches to keep an eye on, such as Marquette vs Miami of Ohio and Northern Iowa vs D1AA's Iowa State.
About 80 D1AA, D1A, and NCR D1 teams are in action this weekend.
Of those, five matches see ranked NCR D1 team vs ranked NCR D1 team.
Indiana (#9) vs Marian (#5)
Belmont Abbey (#15) vs St. Bonaventure (#2)
Wheeling (#6) vs Kutztown (#10)
Iona (#19) vs AIC (#11)
Siena (#13) vs Brown (#1)
The first tournament of the West Coast 7s September 27 at Dignity Health Sports Park has an impressive group of teams already confirmed.
