GRR: Varsity Cup
The Varsity Cup starts this weekend, with 14 teams involved in some way, and a variety of mat chips in the opening round.
Here’s a look at the teams and the matchups:
The Cougars are defending champions and have a bye into the quarterfinals.
This article includes some opinion commentary by Goff Rugby Report Editor Alex Goff. The Varsity Cup has announced that the University of Oklahoma will forfeit its opening-round game with Utah.
Utah now gets a bye to the quarterfinals, to be held April 11, where the Utes will meet the winner of Central Washington and Arizona State.
The Varsity Cup has confirmed the matchup of teams in this year’s bracket.
As previously announced, BYU and Cal, the finalists the last two years, get a bye into the quarterfinals.
BYU will play the winner of UCLA v Air Force. In the other half of the BYU bracket, Utah takes on Oklahoma, and Central Washington faces Arizona State.
Believe it or not, there is rugby being played this weekend outside of the city of Las Vegas (or Henderson) in Nevada, and perhaps one of the more intriguing weekends of rugby will be on the East Coast, when the US Naval Academy men take on Clemson on Saturday and Life University on Sunday.
