Mexico defeated USA Rugby South 30-20 to win the Rugby Americas North Men's U19 Championship in Barbados.
The game was as tight and dramatic as expected, with Mexico's vaunted defense tested by a smart USA South attack that crashed ball up the middle and tried to exploit out wide.
USA Rugby South has named its starting lineup to face Mexico in the final of the Rugby Americas North Men's U19 Championships Sunday in Barbados.
Mexico won the Women's U19 10-a-side championship at the Rugby Americas North U19 Championships, defeating Jamaica 22-0 in the final.
USA Rugby South took 3rd. Mexico shut out Trinidad & Tobago in the quarterfinals 34-0 before edging USA South 17-10 in the semis. That afforded Las Serpientes the chance to avenge a 12-12 tie with Jamaica from yesterday. They did.
USA Rugby South Panthers Head Coach Mark Williams said that his team's 2-0 start is nice, but there are more tough games to get through.
"We came through but we have a ot of work to do," said Williams. "Bermuda was a good team, one of the best Bermuda teams I have seen."
USA Rugby South and Mexico emerged 2-0 from Day One of the Men's U19 competition at the Rugby Americas North championships.
The competition has changed to one in which teams play two shortened games on Day One and also on Day Two, getting everyone through Pool Play and through the semifinals.
